Abstract

Memory and concentration are essential for memorization activities. Concentration can be disrupted by conversation, as it requires managing multiple tasks simultaneously, such as focusing on memorization and engaging in conversation. Sounds may reduce or induce drowsiness, and loud noises can increase heart rate. Based on this background, this study analyzed the effects of conversation during memorization activities on short-term memory, drowsiness levels, and heart rate in college students. Short-term memory was measured using the Task Short-Term Memory test, drowsiness levels were assessed with the Stanford Sleepiness Scale, and heart rate was measured with an oximeter. The results were analyzed using the Paired Sample t-test and Pearson Correlation Test to examine relationships between variables. The findings showed that conversation affects short-term memory but has no significant impact on drowsiness levels or heart rate. The study recommends avoiding conversation during study sessions, though occasional conversation may help reduce drowsiness. Additionally, a quiet environment is recommended for memorization activities.
