Narrative Structure of Roald Dahl’s The Twits

The topic of the thesis is the narrative structure used in The Twits, a novel written by Roald Dahl. I would like to analyze the use of the six elements of narrative structure, such as abstract, orientation, complicating action, evaluation, resolution, and coda of Roald Dahl’s The Twits. Furthermore, the analysis is continued to the effects of the narrative structure elements on the target readers, who are children of 7-13 years old. In analyzing this, William Labov’s (1972) theory of narrative structure will be employed. The research belongs to Stylistics, which is a study of style. In doing the research, the descriptive qualitative research method is used. Besides, in collecting the data the research applies the library research method. The result of my findings shows that two narrative structure elements are not found; they are abstract and coda. Besides, the other four elements that can be found in the novel show that Roald Dahl makes use of them to convey his main messages as well as grab the readers’ attention.
